Should Christians who produce faith based films focus on the Awards or on the Message?
It is a bad practice to light a candle and put it under a bushel – Matthew 5v15. The amount of resources and manpower that goes into making a film is too much than to do nothing afterwards. As a filmmaker you need to reach out to as many people as possible with your film.
Except if your specific story or film is aimed at christians alone, your calling is to “go ye into the world and preach the gospel” Mark 16v15. So we need to take the message to where it is needed. It is to be noted however, that the “ holier than thou” mindset won’t work in this process. The way we make films most times have unbelievers tagged already and by just seeing either the title, the poster design or even the trailer, their mind is already made up not to be blessed by it.
Now back to the main purpose of this post, should Christians go after awards? My answer in “no”. But Christians should ensure their films get to everywhere possible. We must spread the good news. The way I tell my stories, you may almost not know it’s gospel until you are way in to it; hence a very good opportunity for a lot of unbelievers to see it, even before they know what it is.
In all honesty, there is a normal tendency for any born again Christian to align with the latter part of this statement, and I agree as well that the message is the most important. However the former is important too, producing contents worthy of award consideration gives a potent platform for the gospel of Jesus Christ to be preached.
I have had a few of my films selected and screened at major international film festivals over the years and I can tell you that it is a great joy to see unbelievers sit down and with no choice, watch a faithbased content especially people who don’t have Christ or who have not embraced the gospel yet.
Also, the Bible says “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” Matthew 6:33. When we do God’s work (well), some things are naturally added without any struggle whatsoever, however we must make efforts to reach out to where they are.
Thank you for reading my thoughts and I hope this changes your mindset somehow.
